I’ll Gladly Pay You Tuesday For A Hamburger Today!

Follow Up

For those of you not old enough to remember “Popeye” the cartoon which ran from the late 30’s to late 50’s, that phrase was coined by the character Wimpy. (and NO, I’m not that old… I got to watch the reruns in the mid 60’s 😉 )

He was the little overweight guy with an eating disorder.  “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a Hamburger Today” was about his only line in the cartoon. At least that’s all I ever remember him saying…

Of course Tuesday would never come and the loan never repaid!

So Richard, this applies to Internet Marketing HOW you’re asking… Please follow along with me and lets see if I can make some sense out of this analogy.

Well, I got to thinking about all the stumbling blocks that I’ve run into early on in my MLM business as I was trying to help the newest member of my team.  It occurred to me that prospecting, the follow-up in particular, is a lot like Wimpy’s saying.

I would do some of the work today, such as making initial calls, inviting people to meetings or webinar’s, but the PAY-OFF would never come!  WHY?

My “Tuesday” never came due to my lack of Follow Up!

Now there are really only a few of things in our business that pay the bills. Period!

1. Prospecting & Inviting

2. Following Up!

3. Closing the Deal

That’s pretty much all that pays the bills. Nothing else is going to create income.  Most of us get so wrapped up in our blogs, SEO, social media, yada, yada, yada that we… Quit spending time prospecting and inviting people to view our presentation, let alone do the follow up.

At least that was my problem. A lot of people I’ve brought into the business over the years seem to have that same…

I’ll Gladly Pay You Tuesday” mentality.

Here’s a News Flash!

People are NOT going to call you back first.  It just won’t happen. Oh sure, maybe 1% of them will see what you see and have a vision and desire to change their life. BUT…

99% of them won’t call you back, and a good percentage of them won’t have even looked at your presentation at all.

My advice is to be as organized as possible. Start with your list of people to invite.

Put together a spread sheet of names and fields that you can check off and add info to.

Be as detailed as possible!  On the Additional Info & Notes section, write down any bits of important info for your next conversation. Don’t forget what you spoke with them about… Keep great notes!

Remember, the money is in the follow-up!

Don’t pull a Wimpy and have your Tuesday never come due to Your Lack of Follow-Up!

    Hi Calli,
Yeah, Popeye’s age surprised me too! I agree that it can be in any form and a combo of two or three is good. Personally I think following up by phone yields the best results!
    Thanks for your input!

  • Calli 07/14/2011,

I didn’t know Popeye is that old.^^ I agree, the money is in the follow-up. In almost all kinds of business, a follow-up is a must. It can be in any form, too – emails, phone calls, personal visit, and advertisements.
